Chapter 11

Ayanna had such a good time with Johnny that she didn’t even mind the inquisition when her vacation was officially over. She knew that Billie and Dakota would want all the dish, and she wasn’t about to begrudge them. A week after they returned to Chicago, she went over to Dakota’s house for a girls’ night. Along with Toni Beauchamp, Dakota’s best friend, they were gathered in Dakota’s kitchen around the table. They had coffee and peach ice cream with Billie’s delicious peach cobbler. Ayanna was praising it when Billie held up her hand.

“Okay, you can stop with the false modesty. I’ve always been known as the baker in the family but my big brother let me know that mine doesn’t hold a candle to yours. I swear, every bite he puts in his mouth these days is followed by him saying ‘Ayanna’s is better,’ or ‘Ayanna does hers different.’ You’ve got him spoiled rotten already,” she said.

Ayanna blushed pink, but the other women wouldn’t let her get away with it. Dakota and Toni laughed at Billie’s statement, but they assured Ayanna that it was a good thing.

“Honey, if that man thinks you can do something in the kitchen no other woman can, let him!” Dakota said.

Toni agreed wholeheartedly. “I don’t do a lot of cooking, but I am like the sandwich queen. I can make sandwiches that will make you cry, they’re so good. Zane won’t eat anyone else’s now,” she said. “Of course, that means I have to pack him a gourmet lunch to take to work every day, but it’s a small price to pay.”

Ayanna looked around the table at the three women, all of whom had been married less than two years. They were acting like she would soon be joining their ranks, and she felt like a faker. And a failure. It wasn’t going to happen for her.

“So, you and Johnny went to Columbia to drop off the boys, and you stayed two days.” Dakota, the investigative reporter, always liked to get her facts lined up. “What was your favorite part of your visit home?”

Ayanna’s eyes crinkled in a smile. “Going to the drugstore!” They all looked puzzled until she explained. “My ex-fiancé was going to medical school, but he ended up being a pharmacist because he’s terrified of the sight of blood. Anyway, I had to get Alec’s allergy prescription filled, and we went to pick it up,” she began. The story was short but hilarious.

They went to the Walgreens drugstore that was closest to her mother’s house in the University Hill section of town. While they were there, Ayanna started walking the aisles to see if there was anything she needed. She loved drugstores and was always inspecting the end caps where the clearance items were displayed. Johnny was walking behind her when she stopped, her eyes caught by something on the shelf.

“Johnny, what is that?”

He’d picked up the item and told her it was a personal lubricant. “I don’t think you need that, but if you want to try some, go ahead.
